F1 Monza GP – Hülkenberg admits mistakes: “It wasn’t enough”
Nico Hülkenberg was not satisfied with his performance at the end of qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix in Monza. The Sauber driver will have to fight hard on Sunday if he wants to climb back into the points positions. Hülkenberg will line up 12th on the starting grid, having missed out on Q3 by just a few hundredths of a second, unlike his teammate Gabriel Bortoleto who made it through. During free practice sessions, the German had shown good pace, but something went wrong in qualifying that compromised his final result.
The difficulties in Q2
After qualifying, Nico Hülkenberg reflected on his P12 and admitted responsibility for the missed opportunity: “It wasn’t enough from my side. The first run in Q2 went completely wrong, I didn’t set a proper time or it was just a very slow lap, one that doesn’t get you anywhere. So yes, unfortunately it didn’t go well.” The issues in the first attempt also affected his second run: “It leaves you with only one attempt left, which was a good lap, but I had to leave a bit of margin here and there to make sure I set a competitive time. I couldn’t take all the risks that I might have wanted to take if I had done a good first lap.” – he pointed out.
Nico Hülkenberg did not hide his disappointment: “Yes, I’m a bit disappointed and frustrated with myself. But aside from that, the car is quick and we seem competitive.”
The Sauber driver will now need a strong recovery in the race if he wants to finish in the points at Monza. Nico Hülkenberg made it clear he wants to put qualifying behind him and focus entirely on the Grand Prix: “It’s all to play for. It’s as tight as always, but we definitely feel strong, comfortable and confident in the car. So I think we can give it a go tomorrow.”
