Juan Pablo Montoya is certain: Fernando Alonso would beat Max Verstappen if he had a competitive F1 car
Fernando Alonso stronger than Max Verstappen: according to Juan Pablo Montoya, the Asturian would give the Dutchman a real challenge in F1. The four-time world champion is often seen as the fastest and fiercest on the grid, but he has never had to battle the experienced Aston Martin driver. With a competitive car, the Spaniard would fight tooth and nail to win the World Championship.
2025 is the year of McLaren, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri favored for the Drivers’ Championship. Lurking behind them is Max Verstappen, never one to give up, who if he manages to complete a difficult comeback on the Woking duo – currently 36 points behind the leaders after Mexico – would further cement his name in motorsport history.
The Dutchman is already part of bar debates on the “greatest driver of all time.” With four world titles – the first won against Lewis Hamilton, who has seven championships – he has rightfully entered F1 history. But how would he fare against a driver of Fernando Alonso’s caliber?
Montoya: “Alonso is a tougher driver than Verstappen”
Speaking on the MontoyAS podcast, the former Colombian driver made his opinion clear: “If Fernando had a car faster than Max’s, one could question whether Verstappen has the experience needed to face a driver like Alonso. Right now Max is mentally very strong. But Fernando would fight tooth and nail if he had a real chance to win the championship.”
“Alonso is waiting to see what happens with next year’s car. We are all curious to see Adrian Newey’s first car, and I think Fernando would be willing to race another year or two [before retiring]. After all, you don’t give up a chance at the title,” Juan Pablo Montoya concluded.
