Still hope for Mick Schumacher
While all the teams have completed their respective 2025 line-ups (awaiting the confirmation of Lawson at VCARB), Sauber (Audi) is the only team with a seat yet to be confirmed, and rumors about Nico Hulkenberg’s future teammate have been swirling nonstop for months.
In recent weeks, there has been much talk about the supposed interest of the Hinwil team in Gabriel Bortoleto, the outgoing F3 champion and current leader in F2. The Brazilian driver, in addition to his excellent results on track, can also count on the support of Fernando Alonso, who through his agency A14 Management has backed the São Paulo native’s career since the junior categories.
Recently, however, several outlets have reported that a contract renewal for Valtteri Bottas is close to being finalized, with the Finn set to extend his current contract for another season before retiring at the end of 2025.
In reality, according to Blick, Valtteri Bottas is “causing problems and probably wants a better contract and more money,” with negotiations for the renewal now on hold.
After being passed over by Alpine, which opted for rookie Jack Doohan, Mick Schumacher’s candidacy has resurfaced strongly in recent hours. Mick Schumacher is still searching for a seat after his tumultuous split from Haas at the end of 2022: “Is Mick an option? Certainly, we are considering him,” said Mattia Binotto when speaking about the future of the Kaiser’s son to *Corriere della Sera.* – “I’ve met with him and spoken to him. I’ve known him for a long time since he was part of the Ferrari Driver Academy. I know his strengths and advantages. He’s one of the names we have in mind.” – he pointed out.
However, patience is the word at Sauber, with Mattia Binotto aware that they no longer have competitors in the market now that all the other teams have finalized their driver pairings: “We can afford the luxury of not being in a rush, as all the other teams have decided their line-ups. There are two essential aspects: on one hand, experience to set the course for growth. On the other, a young, talented driver who will accompany us on the journey to the top.” – the former Ferrari team principal added.
In this context, Mick Schumacher would fit perfectly with the needs of Audi’s ambitious project, although, to be fair, the German driver did not particularly shine in terms of results and leadership during his two years at Haas.
