Australian driver Oscar Piastri is targeting another strong performance as Formula 1 heads to Silverstone for the 2025 British Grand Prix. After a consistent and impressive first half of the season, Piastri arrives at the iconic British track leading the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship standings and determined to extend his advantage over his McLaren teammate, Lando Norris.
Piastri remains ice-cold under pressure
The 2025 Formula 1 season is increasingly shaping up to be the year of Oscar Piastri’s full emergence as a top-tier contender. Regardless of how the title battle with Lando Norris ultimately ends, the 23-year-old Australian is proving that he can handle the pressure of a championship fight with composure and maturity—especially notable considering this is only his third season in the pinnacle of motorsport.
Oscar Piastri, who previously won the FIA Formula 3 and Formula 2 titles in his rookie seasons, has been nicknamed “Iceman 2.0” by parts of the media and paddock due to his cool-headed approach and emotional restraint—even during the most intense on-track situations. This calm demeanor has even drawn comparisons to former Formula 1 World Champion Kimi Räikkönen, famous for his stoic personality.
Speaking during the traditional media day at Silverstone, the current points leader reinforced this image. Nothing seemed to shake his focus or cool exterior.
“Beating Lando at his home Grand Prix? I’d be happy to win anywhere,” said Oscar Piastri. “Silverstone has always been a track I’ve liked. The fans have always been very kind to me, and I really appreciate that. But honestly, I don’t focus on that. I’m more focused on trying to win, to score another victory that counts for the championship. Silverstone is a special race for me too. I’ve lived in the United Kingdom for a long time, so it feels like a kind of second home race. And it’s a track I really enjoy, so I’m aiming to win more because of those feelings than anything else.”
“I’ve already won championships”
Oscar Piastri also clarified comments made in recent weeks about Max Verstappen still being a threat in the title race, especially after the incident that took place in Austria.
“I’m not worried about what Max is doing or how many points he’s behind,” explained Oscar Piastri. “I think Max Verstappen will be a threat at pretty much every race weekend, or at least most of them, and that’s why you can never fully count him out. We don’t really know yet if the Red Bull Racing car has the pace or not. But in the end, I approach every weekend with the goal of doing my best and focusing on that. So no, I’m not really concerned about where he stands in the championship. Of course, right now he’s a bit further behind, and it’s quite a gap, but I’m not worried either way.”
Oscar Piastri then reflected on how his current fight for the Formula 1 World Championship compares with the championship battles he experienced in junior categories, such as FIA Formula 3 and Formula 2.
“As for the title fight, honestly, it feels pretty familiar,” Oscar Piastri said. “The championships I’ve won in my junior career all came in different ways, so I don’t think there’s just one method to follow. I think I’ve taken something from every season I’ve competed in—and certainly from the titles I’ve won. So to be honest, I don’t see much difference. I’ve tried to keep the same approach. We’re still early in the year, and there’s a long way to go, but this feels like territory I’ve already been in before. So I’m not treating it any differently.” – the Australian concluded.
With his calm mindset, title-winning experience, and increasing confidence, Oscar Piastri is sending a clear message to the rest of the grid: he is here to fight for the championship—and he’s doing it his own way.
