Max Verstappen speaks on future: no sabbatical, still silent on Mercedes links | F1 British GP. Max Verstappen rules out a sabbatical but stays silent on his 2026 future in Formula 1.

Max Verstappen, 2024 F1

Max Verstappen’s highly anticipated media appearance during the Thursday press day at Silverstone stopped the world of motorsport news in its tracks. The reigning four-time Formula 1 World Champion from the Netherlands was immediately bombarded with questions regarding his current contract situation and his long-term future in the sport. Despite the intense media interest, Max Verstappen maintained his composure and offered little clarity, refusing to provide any significant updates or confirmations — particularly regarding whether he will remain with Red Bull Racing or consider a switch to another team such as Mercedes-AMG Petronas.

No sabbatical from Formula 1

One of the few certainties to emerge from the media session was Max Verstappen’s firm denial of any possibility that he would take a break or sabbatical year from Formula One racing. When asked directly about the idea of sitting out a season, Max Verstappen promptly shut down the speculation.

“A sabbatical year, not racing in Formula 1? No,” Verstappen replied. “There will definitely still be Formula 1. And in the future, I will try to combine it with other types of racing, any kind of series I can prepare for. I want to explore the world of motorsport outside of Formula 1 a little more. I’m already doing that through some test sessions, but I also want to take part in actual races.”

This statement was the only partial glimpse into Verstappen’s plans beyond the current contract cycle, hinting at ambitions that stretch into 2026 and potentially beyond — but without anchoring those plans to any specific team or commitment.

Mercedes or Red Bull? Still no confirmation

On all other fronts, Max Verstappen remained tight-lipped, effectively repeating the same carefully worded responses he gave during the previous Grand Prix weekend in Austria. There was no official comment on the swirling rumors suggesting that talks have taken place between his management team and Mercedes. When asked directly why such discussions are reportedly ongoing, the Dutch driver simply responded: “Who says that? I have nothing to add.”

At the same time, Max Verstappen also avoided confirming whether he would remain with Oracle Red Bull Racing in 2026. “I have nothing more to say,” he reiterated. “From my side, nothing has changed. A contract release clause? I don’t speak about my contract. Right now, no decision has been made.”

He further clarified his stance, explaining that his focus is entirely on the present and on maximizing performance with his current team. “For me, this is not about 2026 or anything like that,” Max Verstappen said. “I’m concentrating only on what lies ahead and on the work I’m doing with the team. Naturally, a lot of people make assumptions, but that’s not my role. Why don’t I just say I’ll be 100% with Red Bull? Like I said last week — that’s all I can say on the matter.”

The uncertainty continues

Max Verstappen also added that no driver can speak with complete confidence about next season, given how many uncertainties exist heading into 2026, particularly with major regulation changes looming. “I don’t think anyone can say with absolute certainty that they will feel completely at ease next year,” he added. “There are so many unknowns about next season. The only thing I can do is drive as fast as possible with the car I have right now.”

And so, the saga continues. While Verstappen has quashed speculation about stepping away from the sport, he has not closed the door on the possibility of a team change. With neither confirmation nor denial regarding Mercedes or Red Bull Racing, the Formula 1 paddock remains in suspense about the Dutch superstar’s next move — a key storyline that could reshape the 2026 grid.
