Antonio Perez Garibay, Checo’s father, will not be remembered for his good taste following his latest public statements to ESPN about Ralf Schumacher. The Mexican, during a lengthy discussion about his son, made some remarks lacking in “gentlemanliness.”
Starting on the right foot, Checo Perez’s 2024 season progressively worsened with each race, bringing the Red Bull Mexican driver back to the challenging circumstances of last season. In the paddock, it goes without saying, rumors multiplied, and speculation about Sergio Perez’s increasingly distant future with Milton Keynes became more persistent, even after a contract renewal.
The father of the Guadalajara driver, Antonio Perez Garibay, recently came to his son Checo’s defense but failed to prove himself an eloquent speaker. In his plea on behalf of “his” Sergio, the 65-year-old Mexican criticized the media’s attitude toward the Red Bull driver, particularly targeting Ralf Schumacher.
Perez Sr.’s homophobic remarks about Ralf Schumacher
“The media should at least apologize,” Antonio Perez stated. “There is someone who was a Formula 1 driver and is now a commentator: this journalist first claimed that Checo is already out of Red Bull, then – the following week – came out.”
Antonio Perez Garibay’s comments refer to Ralf Schumacher. The former German driver publicly disclosed his sexual orientation in July, and Perez Senior took the opportunity to say: “I don’t know, maybe he was in love with Checo! If you know what I mean… There are so many strange things: you don’t even know anymore if he’s a journalist, a woman, or a man. His words have raised questions, not about Checo Perez, but about what his wife said about him.”
