F1 needs to make changes to some rules: George Russell calls for modifications to the FIA, highlighting an anomaly in the Budget Cap. George Russell speaks out: the British Mercedes driver analyzes certain anomalies in the FIA regulations, particularly calling for changes related to the Budget Cap.
The 2025 Formula 1 campaign won’t bring the new revolutionary technical regulations, but it will introduce several changes. From the arrival of new faces on the grid to Lewis Hamilton joining Ferrari, and some adjustments to the rules: already next year, F1 will tweak a few things, but for George Russell, this is still not enough.
Goodbye to the additional point: “It never made much sense”
The Mercedes driver has approached the FIA, calling for some changes and expressing approval for the removal of the additional point for the fastest lap in the race. “I’ve always thought it didn’t make much sense. There will always be a driver who, after a tough race in the Top 10, opts to pit, put on fresh tires, and get the extra point. I never really saw the benefit of this rule. I’m glad it’s gone.”
However, the core of George Russell’s statements is not the “extra point”: the #63 raises his voice when it comes to the Budget Cap, calling for regulatory changes.
George Russell: “F1, modify the Budget Cap!”
It’s important to note that in 2025, there will be four (not just two) FP1 sessions where teams must field a rookie driver in place of one of their regulars. The increase in free practice sessions for young drivers is a change welcomed by George Russell: “I think it’s great to give opportunities to younger drivers.”
The British driver’s point of clarification concerns the Budget Cap: “However, perhaps if there are accidents during those sessions, they shouldn’t count towards the cost cap. We’re all operating close to the financial regulations: if a young driver damages the car, then maybe the cost of that incident should be excluded.” – the Mercedes man concluded.
