Currently, in Formula 1, we have only three world champions who continue to battle on track: former driver and 1996 champion Damon Hill spoke about the drivers he believes have the potential to win the world title in the future.
Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton, and most recently Max Verstappen. These are the only drivers on the grid who have managed to lift the most important trophy of the year. The other seventeen would do anything to get their names on the list that starts with Farina in 1950.
On this topic, a former F1 driver whose name is also on this list, Damon Hill, gave his thoughts. During a special episode of the podcast “F1 Explains,” the Australian revealed who he believes among the current drivers has the potential to become world champion in the future.
The first name Hill puts on his list is the current chaser of Max Verstappen at the top of the standings, Lando Norris. “I think Lando has the necessary ingredients to win a title. He has the right qualities.”
“I listened to some of the statements he made during the summer break,” continued the former Williams driver, “and from these, I understood how he is not satisfied even when he finishes in second place. He wants to improve on what he achieved in the first half of the 2024 season.” – he pointed out.
From this list, he does not exclude the one who occupies the other half of the box: “He is still very young. He needs to take advantage of these early years to grow and learn much more. He definitely has the talent and grit needed, and he made a great impression on me right from the start. Additionally, among others, I wouldn’t exclude George Russell. He is certainly among the candidates, as is Charles Leclerc, who in many ways is the typical Ferrari driver.” – Damon Hill concluded.
In short, with all these young drivers, and with many more arriving as early as next season, we can expect a very competitive future in Formula 1.
