Daniel Ricciardo ended his Formula 1 career when Racing Bulls fired him after the Singapore Grand Prix at the Marina Bay street circuit. His exit had been anticipated, judging by the driver’s mood over the weekend at Marina Bay.
In mid-2023, the Australian returned to the Red Bull family, taking Nyck De Vries’ seat at AlphaTauri (now Racing Bulls). From the outset, he set his sights on the Austrian team, stating that he would do everything to secure a seat. However, despite his efforts, Daniel Ricciardo had to stop after the Dutch GP.
During free practice, driver #3 suffered a severe crash that sidelined him for five races. A wrist fracture did not affect his overall health, but it certainly made his journey at Racing Bulls much more complicated. During that time, he was replaced by Liam Lawson, before officially returning at the U.S. Grand Prix.
According to former driver Anthony Davidson, that moment was “crucial” in Daniel Ricciardo’s career. “Daniel gave a young, hungry driver the chance to get behind the wheel,” he said on the Sky Sports F1 podcast.
Liam Lawson only scored points in Singapore, but that was enough to make a strong impression in the paddock—particularly with Helmut Marko. The senior Red Bull advisor was never a huge fan of Daniel Ricciardo and doubled down, stating he would prefer the young New Zealander over the Australian.
At this year’s Singapore Grand Prix, Helmut Marko’s wish came true. Racing Bulls officially announced Daniel Ricciardo’s dismissal, and from the Austin GP onward, Liam Lawson will take his place.
