The weekend of the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka begins with what appears to be the third direct showdown between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Both McLaren drivers come into the weekend as favorites after strong performances from the MCL39 in Melbourne and Shanghai. The papaya team won both of the first two races: Norris leads the World Championship, and Oscar Piastri, who is fourth in the standings just 10 points off the lead, comes off his victory in China.
The road to a direct battle between the two throughout the season seems already set. Lando Norris himself, speaking to journalists in Japan, hinted at expecting tough times in his relationship with his teammate if, as seems likely, the World Championship battle develops into a head-to-head contest between him and Oscar Piastri. “We want to compete against each other, but we are teammates, so it’s not an easy dynamic. It’s never easy to find the perfect balance, but we are working hard as a team to make it work,” said the Englishman.
Advantages and Disadvantages
When asked whether he would prefer to compete against someone from within or outside his team for the championship, Lando Norris highlighted the positives of an internal rivalry at McLaren for the title: “I’m not too worried. I think the good thing about having your opponent in the team is that you can see everything they do. I can see what they do and how they do it.”
“Sometimes trying to do what he does isn’t easy, and I’m sure it’s the same for him – trying to replicate what another driver does is not always an easy task, but at least I have that information. When (the opponent) is in another team, you don’t have that knowledge. In the end, I don’t mind. I’m ready to fight anyone, and I’m excited,” Lando Norris concluded ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix weekend at the Suzuka circuit.
