Piastri began 2025 with a clear goal: the world title. If in 2024 he still seemed to lack something in qualifying or tire management, the Australian now appears to have a clear mindset for winning the championship. Statistics also seem to favor him over Norris and Verstappen.
With his victory in Jeddah, the Melbourne-born driver now totals 99 points, snatching the lead from teammate Lando Norris, who sits at 89. Just behind the Briton is the reigning world champion, Max Verstappen, with 87 points.
The win in Saudi Arabia adds to his two other 2025 victories—one in China and another in Bahrain—and to his two from 2024, in Hungary and Azerbaijan. Just three years after his Formula 1 debut, Piastri has already matched Lando Norris in the number of career wins.
While last season the 2001-born driver still seemed to have some weaknesses, especially in qualifying and tire degradation management, this year he is asserting himself more and more as McLaren’s number one driver.
The numbers also support the Australian. Particularly interesting are the data reported by FormulaPassion. According to their analysis, 2025 marks the 40th season out of 76 in which a single driver has won at least three of the first five Grands Prix.
Even more intriguing is the fact that in 85% of those seasons, that same driver went on to win the world title. There are only six exceptions to this trend: Jim Clark in 1964, Emerson Fittipaldi in 1973, Niki Lauda in 1976, Alain Prost in 1988, Ayrton Senna in 1989, and the most recent case—Lewis Hamilton in 2021.
In 2021, after victories in Sakhir, Portimão, and Montmeló, Hamilton had to contend with a rising star. That year, Red Bull for the first time provided Max Verstappen with a car capable of competing with Mercedes. The battle between the two teams continued until the final round in Abu Dhabi, where the young Dutchman was ultimately crowned champion.
Now, Oscar Piastri also has history on his side—but if 2024 taught us anything, it’s that the season is too long for long-term predictions. We’ll have to wait and see whether the Australian and McLaren can maintain this pace.
