Numerous current and former drivers have expressed their solidarity with Liam Lawson after his brief two-race stint at Red Bull. The decision by the Milton Keynes team to swap the New Zealander with Yuki Tsunoda, who will debut with Red Bull in Japan, has sparked ongoing controversy, with many speculating about what Lawson’s actual performance might be like at Racing Bulls.
According to Jack Doohan, an Alpine driver also under pressure for his potential replacement by Franco Colapinto during the ongoing season, Liam Lawson’s return to Faenza could pose a risk primarily for Red Bull, which is currently dealing with several issues, such as those with the RB21.
In contrast, Liam Lawson could unlock his potential at Racing Bulls, something that was hard to achieve at Red Bull due to the car’s limitations: “I feel sorry for him, but he’s still in Formula 1,” Jack Doohan explained to the media ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix “I think he’s an extremely talented driver, and for one reason or another, he had a very tough time, but again, it was only two races, so it’s a shame. But honestly, I believe he’ll be more of a threat to Racing Bulls than he potentially was to Red Bull. Formula 1 is a ruthless sport, and especially in this situation, I don’t want to comment too much, especially on a top team. It’s a business, and it’s based on performance and results. Liam found himself in a very, very tough situation, and we know how hard it is to drive for Red Bull.” – the Alpine driver concluded at the Suzuka circuit.
