Although dominating the Formula 1 championship, Lando Norris is not fully satisfied with the McLaren’s behavior: he has admitted to facing difficulties behind the wheel.
The 2025 Formula 1 season is unfolding in a completely different direction than expected at the end of the previous year. From Woking came a little gem called the MCL39, which is literally dominating the early part of the championship. Despite this, Lando Norris is not entirely happy with the McLaren’s behavior and admits to struggling.
After six seasons in the top category of four-wheel motorsport, last season the British driver, number 4, had his first major opportunity to fight for something meaningful. Amid various errors—both his and the team’s—given how he finished in Abu Dhabi, everyone expected a 2025 season where he’d push hard for the world title.
Instead, and to the disappointment of many, Lando Norris is still making various mistakes. In the six Grands Prix completed so far, he has claimed just one win, compared to four by teammate Oscar Piastri. The same weaknesses persist. When the Brit is under pressure, he makes mistakes. The most striking episode was during qualifying in Jeddah, where a crash forced him to start from the back and lose a “certain” podium.
It’s precisely these errors that Lando Norris addressed in an interview with Racing News 365, highlighting the various difficulties he is experiencing driving the MCL39. “A McLaren this difficult? I wasn’t expecting it; it was very hard to know. It’s true we have the simulator and all that, but there was nothing that indicated this to us.”
“We knew the MCL39 was a step forward compared to last year’s car, but until you put it on track and drive it, you don’t understand anything. There weren’t enough indications to prepare myself properly; that’s probably what I was missing.”
