In Formula 1, Oscar Piastri has shown all the nuances of his talent and character, bringing McLaren to victory in Miami after a disappointing qualifying session.
Despite the triumph, the Australian driver did not conceal an unusual frustration with his Saturday performance, calling the win “unexpected” and attributing it in part to a good dose of luck.
Piastri experienced a weekend of two halves at the Miami circuit. On Saturday, during qualifying, he struggled to find rhythm and precision in his flying lap, ending up with a modest fourth place on the grid. He described the performance as frustrating, emphasizing how “it’s difficult to win many races” from that position.
But on Sunday, helped by a chaotic start that saw Lando Norris and Max Verstappen make contact on the first lap, Oscar Piastri took full advantage. The pace of the McLaren MCL39 turned out to be surprisingly strong: Oscar managed the race pace perfectly and overtook Verstappen decisively, while his teammate struggled behind the world champion.
Oscar Piastri’s words
While celebrating the win in Miami, the six-time Grand Prix winner remained clear-headed:
“I don’t want to always have to rely on luck. The pace was there, but it won’t be like that every weekend.”
A statement that shows not only his ambition, but also the awareness that to consistently fight at the front, continuity is essential. The message is clear: McLaren is making significant progress and Piastri has the speed to lead, but neither he nor the team can afford lapses in focus. The title fight has only just begun — and Oscar doesn’t want to leave anything to chance.
