Alexander Albon showed excellent skills in Australia, finishing the GP in fourth place and giving Ferrari a hard time. The Thai driver’s success started from qualifying, where Albon stood out positively compared to his teammate.
Alexander Albon has been a topic of discussion in recent months. The driver change at Williams had highlighted his limitations, and there were fears that Sainz’s arrival might make things even harder for him. However, during the Melbourne weekend, Alexander proved the opposite, starting from Saturday’s session. Both Williams cars managed to reach Q3, thanks to the great work of the Grove team.
In the final part of qualifying, Alexander Albon completed a lap in 1:15.737, a time that placed him in sixth. The two Ferrari drivers occupied the two spots behind him, while Carlos Sainz rounded out the top 10.
In the race, Alexander Albon was immediately overtaken by Charles Leclerc, who then hunted down Yuki Tsunoda. On the other hand, Lewis Hamilton struggled and couldn’t break free from his uncomfortable position in the midfield. Alexander Albon made life difficult for the Ferrari driver, who had to deal with several obstacles throughout the day.
In the final stages of the race, Alexander Albon had already left the Ferraris behind, who fell back due to a strategic mistake. He was battling Antonelli for fourth place. On track, the Italian overtook the Thai driver, but a five-second penalty for Kimi allowed the number 23 driver to finish the race just outside the podium.
Alex Albon pleased with his performance
“It was the first race of the year, and it was very difficult. Those who finished the race did a fantastic job. A lot of experience was needed,” explained Alexander. These words inevitably bring to mind Carlos Sainz, his teammate. The Spaniard finished his Williams debut with a zero after crashing under the Safety Car. Thus, driver number 23 can be even more satisfied with the result, as the 12 points gained by Williams are all thanks to Albon.
Alexander Albon concluded by emphasizing the importance of staying calm in races like these, where avoiding risks is the solution that pays off most of the time. “In some situations, it felt like I wasn’t pushing enough, but it was always better to stay cautious without going all out. In these types of races, you have to survive, and then the result will come.”
