Formula 1 engineering mastermind Adrian Newey is already facing an uphill battle at Aston Martin, and it became even clearer after Lance Stroll’s furious post-race radio at the 2025 British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
Despite achieving a solid result in difficult conditions—crossing the finish line in seventh place and scoring valuable points for the Aston Martin Aramco F1 Team—Lance Stroll did not hold back in his criticism of the AMR25 car, calling it “the worst piece of crap I’ve ever driven in my life.”
The Canadian driver is known for performing well in wet conditions, something he had demonstrated in past races. At Silverstone, amid a chaotic and rain-affected Grand Prix, he once again showed skill and racecraft, climbing the order after starting on soft tyres—a rare choice that paid off early on.
Stroll had climbed as high as fourth place during the race and looked on course for a top-five finish. However, in the closing laps, he was overtaken by multiple rivals as the performance of the AMR25 began to fade compared to the faster and more consistent cars of competitors.
Adrian Newey Watches as Aston Martin Struggles at Home
Adrian Newey, the legendary former Red Bull Racing technical director, was present in the paddock for the race weekend at Silverstone. His attendance was notable given the close proximity of the Aston Martin F1 Team’s factory to the historic circuit. His presence, as at the Monaco Grand Prix earlier in the season, seemed to motivate the team to push to its limits—even if the results remained far from ideal.
Team Radio Reveals Stroll’s Outburst
The frustration within Aston Martin became especially evident in Lance Stroll’s post-race team radio, where he unleashed an unfiltered opinion about the car’s behavior and performance.
Engineer: “Okay Lance. That was a crazy car to drive, but great race.”
Lance Stroll: “Crazy is an understatement. If I’m honest, this is the biggest piece of s*** I’ve ever driven in my life.”
Engineer: “Yes, but you still finished seventh.”
The exchange was anything but lighthearted and exposed the internal struggles at the Silverstone-based team.
A Team in Crisis, Hoping for a Newey Revival
The outburst from Lance Stroll underscores the growing dissatisfaction inside Aston Martin. Following a promising 2023 season that hinted at a potential breakthrough, the team owned by Lawrence Stroll has failed to take the next competitive step in 2024 and 2025. Instead, they often find themselves battling in the midfield, unable to match the pace of the top teams.
The arrival of Adrian Newey is seen as a critical move to reshape the team’s technical foundation ahead of Formula 1’s new regulations in 2026. Many within the paddock see Newey’s influence as Aston Martin’s best hope of transforming itself into a genuine title contender. But judging by Stroll’s brutal words, there is a long road ahead—and perhaps no time to waste.
