Despite rumours portraying Adrian Newey at Aston Martin as a dictator, an official denial has arrived from a team member.
Last season, in addition to being remembered as one of the most memorable and hard-fought, also featured the most market movements in history. Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari, Carlos Sainz to Williams, Kimi Antonelli to Mercedes, and the various Red Bull changes. But one move, not involving drivers yet equally important, was that of Adrian Newey. The British engineer, after his spell at Red Bull, chose to move on. His alternatives were settling in Maranello and wearing red, or staying in England with Aston Martin. He chose the latter. Now, everyone is waiting to see the results of his work, expected next year. In the meantime, many rumours are circulating, with some describing Newey as a dictator within Aston Martin. However, the team has promptly issued a denial.
The official denial
Refuting these rumours was Aston Martin Team Principal Andy Cowell, who clarified the role of the legendary engineer within the team. “He joined us in March and immediately dove into interpreting the regulations, in relation to what the team had already developed. Being an engineer, he works very well at the whiteboard, but exceptionally well in a working group that handles every single detail of the race car.” Cowell thus promptly dismissed the rumours of Newey’s authoritarian attitude: “He is not a dictator, he is truly immersed in the work in a detailed manner and explains things to us from the ground up.”
Cowell also added in the interview how Newey’s work is already having an impact this year: “He’s examining every aspect, even how to change the ride height between one session and another in two minutes. For us, having an engineer with his experience is very exciting,” Cowell concluded.
With the rumour of Adrian Newey being a dictator now denied, all that remains is to wait eagerly for the 2026 season to see his first Aston Martin hit the track.
