Between flashes of brilliance and setbacks, Mercedes is questioning the true potential of Kimi Antonelli after a challenging start to the season.
Kimi Antonelli’s Formula 1 debut with Mercedes has proven more complicated than expected, despite the strong confidence the Brackley team placed in the young driver.
Following Lewis Hamilton’s departure, the Brackley outfit decided to bet everything on Kimi Antonelli, the eighteen-year-old prodigy catapulted into the top category with a rapid trajectory that skipped even Formula 3.
Highlights and shadows of a destined debut
Antonelli’s rise was meteoric: from F2 straight into a Mercedes seat in F1, a car that for years symbolized dominance. And in the first six race weekends, the young Italian talent showed promising signs, collecting 48 points and surprising everyone with a pole position in the Miami Sprint, which he then finished in a respectable seventh place. For a rookie, it was an encouraging start.
But Formula 1 doesn’t offer any favors. After that initial high, came three tough races: two retirements due to technical issues in Imola and Barcelona, and a costly mistake in qualifying at Monaco, which left him stuck at the back of the grid with no chance to recover. The talent is there—but so is the inexperience. And the pressure to immediately prove himself to a team used to winning is starting to be felt.
From Mercedes, at least publicly, come messages of support and confidence. The plan appears to be to give Antonelli time to develop, avoiding premature comparisons with Lewis Hamilton or George Russell. But in the paddock, questions are starting to circulate: is he really the right man to relaunch the team?
