A Sunday Without a GP
This past weekend was the first relaxing Sunday in nearly a month for Formula 1 drivers, following the European triple-header that took them to Imola, Monaco, and Barcelona in quick succession. And in a season as packed with races and commitments as this one, it will soon be time to fly to Montreal, where the Canadian Grand Prix will be held on Sunday.
Many key figures from the paddock decided to enjoy a day off. Some, however, didn’t want to give up sport entirely—though not as participants this time, but as spectators, and from a very special vantage point. That was the case for George Russell, who, along with his girlfriend, didn’t miss the chance to attend the Roland Garros final between Italy’s Jannik Sinner and Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, who eventually prevailed after a five-set marathon.
Russell Enjoys the Show
The Mercedes driver—who will be looking to bounce back in Canada after a disappointing European triple-header for the Brackley-based team—was in luck: the duel between the two brightest stars of world tennis in Paris lived up to the hype. The match became the longest final ever at the French Open, lasting 5 hours and 29 minutes.
It’s no surprise, then, that the British driver celebrated the show put on by the two players on Instagram. “What an insane tennis match at Roland Garros!!! Both were deserving winners!” wrote the Silver Arrows driver on the popular social platform. “Congratulations to Carlos and Jannik for an incredible match.”
