Andrea Kimi Antonelli kicked off the Mexican Grand Prix weekend with strong performances in the first two practice sessions, finishing second in FP1 and third in FP2. Despite some challenges on Friday, the Mercedes driver showed he is ready to battle through qualifying and the race.
Kimi Antonelli himself acknowledged the ups and downs of the day: “It was a good day,” he told Sky Sport F1. “I felt comfortable in the car right from the start. Honestly, FP2 went a bit worse than FP1 because I had an issue at the beginning of the session. That slightly disrupted the program, as we tried some changes to the car and found it more difficult to hit the curbs, compared to this morning. We have a lot of work to do tonight, but overall we started off on the right foot.”
Overall, Friday was a mix of highs and lows for Kimi Antonelli, but he was satisfied with the work completed in Mexico City. “We tried to stick to the program in both FP1 and FP2. FP2 was slightly compromised, but in FP1 we focused on a long run and only did one lap on the softs, so it was a productive day. We collected a lot of data and now we are focusing on tomorrow,” he explained.
Looking ahead to qualifying, scheduled for 23:00 Central European Time, Kimi Antonelli emphasized the importance of adapting to the track: “It will be important to follow the track evolution, because grip was quite low this morning and didn’t improve much in FP2. Finding the right compromise and improving will be crucial, as tomorrow will certainly be very tight.”
