Mercedes, after a complicated qualifying, finished the Monaco GP in 11th and 18th place, with George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli respectively. At the end of the race, the British driver did not hide his frustration.
This year, the FIA introduced a mandatory two-stop rule at the Monaco GP for all drivers, aiming to create more on-track action. However, the result was not what was hoped for, and many drivers voiced strong opinions about it. Mercedes was among the teams that opted to complete both pit stops toward the end of the GP, hoping for a Safety Car or a red flag.
Strategy took center stage
The two Mercedes cars spent almost the entire race stuck behind the Williams drivers, unable to find overtaking opportunities. George Russell attempted a pass on Alex Albon but cut the corner coming out of the tunnel. The stewards penalized the British Mercedes driver with a drive-through for not giving the position back. Despite the penalty, George Russell managed to gain three positions, but still finished outside the points.
Two proposals to change Monaco
After the race, the Mercedes driver was interviewed by Sky Sports F1 UK. During the interview, he offered two suggestions—one quite playful—to make the race more engaging for both drivers and spectators.
“I’ve got a really good idea. Every driver should have a button they can press to activate sprinklers around the track. You can choose whether to do it in qualifying or the race, but you can only use it once per weekend. Maybe one driver per team. The sprinklers come on, it spices things up. I think it’s the only solution.”
However, George Russell also proposed a more realistic and less fanciful idea:
“Let’s have two qualifying sessions. You have a sprint race on Saturday and that’s one win, then another qualifying race on Sunday and that’s the other win.”
Rain, too, according to the driver of car #63, could play a key role in the Monaco GP:
“The race is pretty ridiculous, unless you have some extreme rain. We’ve been lucky that in a couple of the past years we’ve had rain. But this is Monaco, there’s no other race like this. Probably 95% of the people who come here don’t come to watch the race.”
