Antonelli comments on contact with Sainz: “It was frustrating!”
Kimi Antonelli left Austin with great disappointment after a United States Grand Prix that could have brought him valuable points both for himself and for Mercedes. Starting from seventh on the grid, the young Italian driver hoped to confirm the strong pace he had shown throughout the weekend, but a contact with the Williams of Carlos Sainz put an end to all hopes of a positive result.
“It was a frustrating race for us. I felt comfortable in the car from the very beginning, just as I had for the entire weekend, and I was really looking forward to trying to gain a few positions,” Kimi Antonelli explained after the race.
The contact with Sainz that ended Antonelli’s race
The driver from Bologna described the moment that compromised his Grand Prix: “I tried to leave a bit of space for Carlos in Turn 15 when I saw him coming. I managed to do so, but we still made contact, and that put an end to any realistic chance of scoring important points today.”
Up until that moment, Antonelli had been putting together a solid and mature weekend. His Mercedes had proven competitive in qualifying, and the feeling with the car was positive since the early sessions. The incident was especially painful because Antonelli had been among the fastest of the midfield drivers and was on course for what could have been his best finish of the season.
A missed opportunity in Austin for the Mercedes rookie
For Antonelli, the race in Austin represented an important chance to showcase his progress and consistency behind the wheel of the Mercedes. The young Italian’s pace during the practice sessions and qualifying had been encouraging, giving him hope for a strong race result. However, the contact with Carlos Sainz changed everything, turning what could have been a weekend to remember into one to forget.
“It was a disappointing day, but we move on. Racing is also about moments like these, and we have to learn from every episode. We can’t change what happened, but we can come back stronger,” Antonelli continued, keeping a composed and mature attitude despite the frustration.
Mercedes, too, left Austin with mixed feelings. While the team had shown improved performance compared to previous races, Antonelli’s retirement meant a missed opportunity to collect more points in the Constructors’ Championship. Every point counts, especially as the fight with Ferrari and McLaren remains tight in the standings.
Antonelli looks ahead to the Mexican Grand Prix
The Formula 1 season never slows down, and Kimi Antonelli is already looking ahead to the next round. The focus now shifts to Mexico, where the young Mercedes driver hopes to bounce back quickly and return to the points. The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez offers completely different conditions from Austin — high altitude, thin air, and a layout that requires excellent mechanical grip — but Antonelli is ready to take on the challenge.
“Now we go straight to Mexico, and we’ll have the chance to make up for it quickly. I hope we can do it, because the championship is tight and every single point will be crucial,” Antonelli said as he looked forward with determination.
The Italian rookie knows that consistency will be key in the final part of the season. With only a few races remaining, Mercedes needs both of its drivers to deliver solid results to secure the team’s position in the Constructors’ standings. For Antonelli, the focus remains on learning and gaining experience in every race, but his performances so far have shown promise and potential for future success.
Despite the frustration in Austin, Antonelli’s maturity and calm reaction once again confirmed his steady development. Mercedes continues to support his growth, confident that setbacks like this one will only make him stronger. The team will now work intensively to ensure that both cars are competitive in Mexico, aiming to capitalize on every opportunity in the closing stages of the season.
As the F1 calendar moves toward its final rounds, Antonelli will aim to turn frustration into motivation, with his sights set on finishing the year on a high note. The upcoming Mexican Grand Prix will be another chance for the young Italian to show his speed, resilience, and ability to recover after a challenging weekend in Austin.
