The weekend in Austin proved to be a difficult one for Oscar Piastri. After a challenging qualifying session on Saturday, the Australian driver also faced a tough race on Sunday, finishing in fifth place — far below expectations for McLaren. Although he managed to gain one position at the start by overtaking George Russell, Oscar Piastri admitted that he struggled throughout the race to find confidence and rhythm with his car.
“I tried several different things, but nothing really worked. The balance felt very different from what I was expecting, and even when the rear tyres started to degrade, I never found the pace I was looking for,” Oscar Piastri explained after the race, clearly disappointed by the outcome.
Piastri: “I didn’t feel comfortable since Friday”
According to the young Australian, the issues weren’t necessarily linked to the car itself, but rather to the difficulty of finding the right setup on a demanding and technical track like the Circuit of the Americas.
“It’s probably something specific to this circuit,” Oscar Piastri said. “I never really felt completely in tune with the car. Usually, I need a bit of time to get into rhythm, but this weekend it just never happened. We tried various setups, but none of them truly improved the situation. In race trim we’re not too bad, but in qualifying we’ve been struggling for a while now. We need to understand whether we’re really maximizing the car’s potential every weekend.”
Throughout the Austin weekend, McLaren seemed to lack the precision and balance that have characterized their strongest performances this season. The bumpy surface and constantly changing wind conditions made it difficult for Piastri to find the ideal window of performance, especially in the medium-speed corners where the MCL39 usually excels. The result was a car that felt unpredictable and inconsistent across stints.
A weekend below expectations for McLaren
Fifth place might not seem disastrous, but for Oscar Piastri — who has been one of the standout drivers of the 2025 season — it felt like a missed opportunity to consolidate his lead in the championship fight. Both Max Verstappen and Lando Norris managed to score strong results, further tightening the battle at the top.
Despite the disappointment, Oscar Piastri emphasized that such weekends are part of the learning curve. His calm and pragmatic reaction showed the maturity of a driver who knows how to keep perspective during a long and demanding season. The Australian underlined that, although things didn’t go according to plan in Austin, the overall pace of the McLaren package remains competitive enough to challenge for victories in the remaining races.
Piastri remains confident in his title fight with Verstappen
After the race, the inevitable topic was his ongoing championship battle with Max Verstappen. Following the United States Grand Prix, the Dutch driver reduced the gap in the standings, but Oscar Piastri appeared unfazed by the situation.
“It’s true that Max has found a lot of pace since the summer break, but it’s not something that makes me lose confidence,” he explained. “I’ve already been through situations where the gaps closed and I managed to respond. I know I can do it again. I’m not interested in counting points; what matters is being fast. If we find our rhythm, the rest will take care of itself.”
For Piastri, the mindset remains focused on performance rather than calculations. The Australian driver stressed that his main objective is to rediscover the form he had before the summer, when he consistently fought at the front and collected key wins. “This weekend wasn’t what I wanted, but the season is far from over,” he added. “I just need to get back to the level I was at earlier in the year. Speed is what wins championships — not doing the math.”
Eyes on recovery ahead of Mexico
McLaren will now turn their attention to the upcoming Mexican Grand Prix, where the team hopes to bounce back. The thin air and high-altitude conditions of the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez will present new challenges, but also opportunities for McLaren to regain momentum. With only a handful of races left, every result could prove decisive in the title battle against Red Bull and Ferrari.
Piastri’s calm and confidence reflect the poise of a driver who is growing stronger with each race weekend. While Verstappen has intensified his charge in recent rounds, the Australian’s consistency and ability to extract performance from the MCL39 remain key assets. Both McLaren and Oscar Piastri know that the championship is still wide open — and one strong weekend could turn the balance once again in their favor.
The Austin setback may have slowed his momentum, but Oscar Piastri leaves the United States with determination to respond. His focus now is on rediscovering the feeling with the car and delivering another top-level performance in Mexico, as the 2025 Formula 1 season enters its decisive phase.
