Andrea Kimi Antonelli is ready to make his Formula 1 debut as an official Mercedes driver in his rookie season. However, Sky F1 analyst Karun Chandhok believes that any mistakes by the Italian will leave him with “nowhere to hide” and that the “rookie excuse” will not be tolerated, partly due to the precedent set by Max Verstappen’s success in the 2015 season.
Speaking on the Sky Sport F1 Podcast, Chandhok commented on Antonelli: “I think whether you’re driving for the team that finished 10th in the championship or for the team leading the grid, as a rookie in F1, you can’t hide. For Kimi Antonelli, coming in as a debutant but with a top team means that results are expected, just like when Lewis joined McLaren and immediately achieved nine podiums, or as Oscar Piastri has demonstrated over the past two years.”
“The expectations for rookies are very high. You can no longer just say, ‘Oh, I’m here to learn.’ That excuse has disappeared after seeing drivers like Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, and George Russell.” – he pointed out.
Despite these remarks, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff recently reassured the young driver while addressing the team’s shareholders, emphasizing that while the Bologna native is immensely talented, he will still need time to adapt. With this, the Austrian hopes to ease some of the pressure on the 18-year-old.
We will see how Antonelli performs in the Australian Grand Prix in two months when the lights go out in Melbourne at the Albert Park circuit
