After a year away, Liam Lawson returned to the cockpit to replace Daniel Ricciardo once again. However, following widespread praise, criticism is now emerging, starting with the former Colombian driver. According to Montoya, Lawson is too focused on proving himself as the best, creating difficulties for the team he hopes to join in the future.
The Red Bull environment in 2024 has been far from harmonious, and the effects are visible on the track. For several races, the team has no longer topped the Constructors’ Championship standings. Part of the blame undeniably lies with Sergio Perez, who has struggled to maintain the same level as his teammate this year, often finding himself battling with lower-ranked teams.
Liam Lawson’s arrival has further jeopardized Sergio Perez’s position, with speculation that the Mexican driver could be replaced by the New Zealander. In VCARB, Liam Lawson has been performing impressively, frequently dueling with Sergio Perez.
However, these battles have not sat well with former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya. “I said it in Mexico, and I’ll say it again now. I don’t understand what Liam is trying to achieve. Checo has been very clean and made things easy for Liam, but he’s been overly aggressive again.” It’s worth noting that on the Mexican track, the two clashed and even made contact, but Lawson, driving for VCARB, ultimately came out on top.
“I understand that he wants to prove he’s better, that he’s capable of everything, and that Checo is no one. But the only thing Liam is doing is stealing points from Red Bull in the Constructors’ World Championship.”
