Is Checo staying or leaving?
Even during this end of the Formula 1 season, the driver market never rests. The seats for 2025 seem virtually all filled, but rumors continue to circulate in the paddock, focusing particularly on the second seat at Red Bull. Sergio Perez‘s position is perpetually uncertain, raising questions about his future in F1. Spanish media, Marca in particular, are convinced that Checo has such solid financial backing that it may dissuade Red Bull from letting him go.
Liam Lawson steps up
Other sources, on the contrary, suggest that a succession could occur at the end of this season, outlining a possible rivalry between Liam Lawson and Franco Colapinto to inherit his place. The New Zealander, “raised” by the Red Bull academy, would be the most logical choice. However, someone who has already been in his position before—promoted to Red Bull just a few months after debuting in F1 with the junior team—has warned him to take the time to learn: Alex Albon, Max Verstappen’s former teammate in the second half of the 2019 season and all of 2020, has indeed “suggested” that Lawson be patient.
Alex Albon’s warning
“I think Liam is in a win-win situation,” Alex Albon commented, speaking about the market rumors surrounding his colleague. “It seems to me that, at worst, he still has his place secured in RB. In my mind, I ask: do you really need to jump into the main team so quickly to challenge Max? Based on my experience, it’s not a bad idea to spend a couple of years learning your craft a bit better. But of course, if there’s an opportunity, and you have it, you have to take it,” concluded the Thai driver from Williams.
