With a lighthearted remark, New Zealander Liam Lawson hinted at wanting guidance from the Milton Keynes team regarding his next season in Formula 1.
A challenging start to 2025 with Red Bull
Lawson’s 2025 season with Red Bull began as briefly as it was disappointing for the young driver. He was moved to Racing Bulls — the Red Bull satellite team where he debuted in 2023, initially replacing the injured Daniel Ricciardo and later taking over Daniel Ricciardo’s seat for the final races of 2024 — in what became a swap with Yuki Tsunoda. Tsunoda moved to Red Bull himself but failed to deliver fully satisfying results.
Future teammate of Verstappen still uncertain
Since the Japanese Grand Prix, Lawson has continued the season with Racing Bulls, but the identity of Max Verstappen’s teammate for 2026 remains unclear. While Tsunoda’s chances of continuation are low, advisor Helmut Marko has expressed admiration for Isack Hadjar — Lawson’s current teammate — and for Red Bull Junior Team talent Arvid Lindblad, the Anglo-Swedish driver who could move up from F2 to Racing Bulls in 2026. Another potential candidate from Marko’s academy is Irish F2 driver Alex Dunne, who recently ended ties with McLaren’s program.
Lawson focused despite uncertain future
At this moment, Liam Lawson does not know what his 2026 Formula 1 future holds or with which team he will compete. In an interview with RacingNews365, he expressed a desire for clarity soon: “I’d like to know tomorrow, honestly,” he admitted, “but of course, in this team, it’s normal to be left a bit in suspense. That’s how it is right now. I know the only thing I control is my performance in the car. Until I get that answer, I’m focused only on that. There are also very exciting, unique, and fantastic races ahead. Even for me, after completing a full cycle of races, returning to tracks I’ve already raced on is thrilling. It’s the part I enjoy most about the season. So I’d say I’m more focused on that than anything else.”
