According to former Formula 1 driver Johnny Herbert, George Russell could join the fight for the 2025 Drivers’ Championship. The Brit has started the season strongly, with four podiums in the first eight races. It’s his best career start. He is currently fourth in the standings, 62 points behind leader Oscar Piastri.
McLaren is dominating the championship with six wins from eight races. The Woking-based team leads both standings and has consistently outperformed the competition so far. But Herbert believes that Russell, despite the gap, could re-enter the fight with a bit of luck and consistent results.
Herbert praises George Russell’s determination. “He has impressive consistency,” he said. “He has a strong character. He’s always had this confidence.” The former driver notes increasing confidence on track. According to him, George Russell is showing maturity and a winning mindset, which are necessary to remain competitive in the long term.
Is George Russell’s leadership role an advantage?
After Lewis Hamilton’s departure, Russell has taken on the role of team leader at Mercedes. He now leads the team alongside rookie Kimi Antonelli. The internal challenge is becoming interesting. Herbert believes Russell is already aware of the threat posed by the newcomer, who is both promising and fast.
“George needs to keep an eye on Antonelli,” Herbert added. The 18-year-old is developing quickly and aiming high. To maintain his leadership within the team, Russell needs to remain consistent. That’s the only way he can ensure the team’s full trust. In Formula 1, the most reliable driver always becomes the team’s main reference.
Johnny Herbert insists: “The team trusts George because he’s delivering results.” The key to success? Consistency and mental focus. With those qualities, Russell could become a real outsider in the title fight. Now only time will tell if he can close the gap to Piastri and challenge McLaren.
