Lando Norris eases the pressure
The rain in Melbourne masked part of McLaren’s technical advantage over its rivals. In fact, only Max Verstappen, a master in wet conditions, was able to fight with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. But as soon as his intermediate tires lost performance, he quickly fell 15 seconds behind—a gap that only the Safety Car erased.
In Australia, McLaren won despite being “slowed down” by the rain, and the Chinese Grand Prix confirmed the significant technical advantage of the MCL39. However, Lando Norris refuses to consider the championship already settled.
Lando Norris’ words
“This start to the season doesn’t put any pressure on me. I’m leading the standings, but at the moment, it makes no difference to me. It doesn’t change what I do, and the same goes for the team,” the Briton said in the Chinese GP press conference. “I had a good weekend, and I’m focused on trying to do the same here, but people need to calm down a bit. I probably won’t think about the championship until mid-year.” – the British driver pointed out at the end of the Shanghai race.
Meanwhile, George Russell believes McLaren has the potential to win every race of the 2024 season, just like Red Bull did in 2023. His comment didn’t sit well with Lando Norris—who criticized the Mercedes driver’s mentality—nor with his teammate Oscar Piastri, who, after Melbourne, said: “If he wants to throw away his season after one race, I’ll let him do it…”
