1996 Formula 1 World Champion Damon Hill emphasizes the pressure on his fellow countryman
The two McLaren teammates are separated by just 15 points in the standings
Ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring, former Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya made a bold statement about Lando Norris, suggesting that “In Austria, Lando Norris must bounce back, or he risks sinking for good.” And bounce back he did. The British driver delivered an emphatic response on track. Despite missing the first free practice session (FP1), Lando Norris was untouchable in qualifying, and in the race, he firmly defended against an early attack from his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri during the first stint, before pulling away during the hard-tyre phase of the Grand Prix.
This marked Lando Norris’s third victory of the 2025 Formula 1 season, bringing the head-to-head score between the two McLaren drivers to 5–3 in his favor. More importantly, it reduced his deficit in the championship standings to just 15 points behind Oscar Piastri, reigniting the intra-team battle. The next stop on the calendar is the prestigious British Grand Prix at Silverstone, a race that carries immense emotional weight for Norris.
In both 2023 and 2024, Lando Norris came close to winning in front of his home crowd but fell just short. This year, he will line up on the grid with a single objective in mind: to finally claim victory at Silverstone and, perhaps, begin to write his name alongside the likes of Lewis Hamilton in the history books — both as a British Grand Prix winner and, eventually, as a British Formula 1 World Champion.
According to 1996 World Champion Damon Hill, that level of success is not just a goal — it’s an obligation. Speaking to The Guardian, Damon Hill stressed the immense importance of the 2024 season for Lando Norris and what is at stake in his battle with Oscar Piastri. “Lando Norris is clearly very talented and intelligent,” Hill explained. “But he doesn’t seem particularly concerned about the idea of losing this title fight. The truth is, he cannot afford to lose it. I don’t know if he truly understands what it would mean for his career if he ends up coming second to Oscar Piastri this year.”
Damon Hill essentially argued that the trajectory of Lando Norris’s Formula 1 career — and his reputation in the sport — is now directly tied to the outcome of his internal battle at McLaren. While Oscar Piastri, still in the early stages of his F1 career, has everything to gain and nothing to lose, it is Lando Norris who carries all the weight of expectation. As Hill pointed out, Norris cannot allow himself to lose to Oscar Piastri, especially in a year where the McLaren MCL39 is clearly a race-winning car and the team is consistently competitive against both Red Bull Racing and Ferrari.
With the British Grand Prix approaching and McLaren continuing to close the gap to the front-running teams, the pressure on Norris is higher than ever — not only to deliver results but also to affirm his status as the leader within the team and a legitimate title contender.
