While the Formula 1 world prepares for the return to racing action this weekend with the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix at the historic Spa-Francorchamps circuit, the focus remains firmly on several key narratives. Among them, the internal rivalry within the McLaren Formula 1 team between their two talented drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, continues to generate significant attention.
Heading into the race weekend, Australian driver Oscar Piastri leads his British teammate by eight points in the Drivers’ Standings, a gap largely attributed to his recent back-to-back victories at the Red Bull Ring in Austria and at Silverstone, where he triumphed in front of his home crowd. This intra-team battle at McLaren, encouraged by the so-called “Papaya Rules” — a reference to McLaren‘s orange livery and their philosophy of allowing drivers to race freely — has been welcomed by fans and pundits alike. The team’s decision to give its drivers the freedom to race each other without imposing strict team orders has added to the excitement of the season.
Among those closely following the McLaren rivalry is 1997 Formula 1 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve. In an interview published by Speedweek.com, the Canadian driver shared his views on the fascinating contrast between Norris and Piastri. While he refrained from naming a clear favourite, Villeneuve acknowledged the different mindsets and strengths that each driver brings to the fight.
Jacques Villeneuve explained that he is particularly intrigued by the psychological and performance-based differences between the two teammates. “I’m fascinated by how different these two drivers are,” the 54-year-old said. “I believe both are capable of winning the World Championship, and right now, nobody can say for certain where either of them will end up.”
However, Villeneuve stated that he considers Lando Norris to be the faster of the two, although he warned that the British driver’s tendency toward harsh self-criticism could become a liability. “I think Norris is faster,” he continued, “but he needs to be careful, because he is so self-critical that he sometimes ends up self-destructing.”
As for Oscar Piastri, Villeneuve praised the Australian for his mental resilience during the first half of the 2025 Formula 1 season. Nevertheless, the former champion noted that the British Grand Prix revealed a more emotional side of the young Australian, particularly after he was penalized during the race. “Piastri appeared mentally very strong in the first part of the season, but at Silverstone we saw a different side of him, where he was visibly angry about a penalty,” Villeneuve observed. “When you’re in a title fight, your mindset changes.”
He also pointed out how the standings have shifted, noting that Lando Norris had previously led the championship but was overtaken by Oscar Piastri. Norris is now determined to reclaim the lead, which adds another layer of intensity to the contest between the two McLaren drivers.
“We haven’t yet seen every side of Oscar Piastri,” Villeneuve concluded. “I’m very curious to see whether he will continue to grow in these pressure-filled situations or if he’ll begin to show signs of nerves.”
