The persistent speculation about Max Verstappen possibly joining the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team in 2026 continues to dominate headlines. At the same time, questions are being raised about the future of current Mercedes driver George Russell, with many wondering if the British driver might have to make way for the four-time world champion from the Netherlands.
According to multiple rumours circulating in the paddock and among F1 insiders, George Russell — whose current contract with Mercedes expires at the end of 2025 — could potentially be the one replaced should Max Verstappen decide to leave Red Bull Racing and switch to the Silver Arrows.
This scenario is being discussed despite the fact that George Russell has been delivering a very strong performance throughout the 2025 Formula 1 season. The British driver has already claimed a victory at the Canadian Grand Prix and stood on the podium five times. He has also consistently scored points in every race so far, with the sole exception of the Monaco Grand Prix.
However, speculation about his future at Mercedes continues to surface — in part due to the presence of young Italian driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli, a Mercedes junior prospect backed by Team Principal Toto Wolff. Despite Kimi Antonelli’s inexperience at Formula 1 level, some believe Mercedes is grooming him for a future race seat.
Russell responds with confidence
Many pundits and former drivers have shared their concerns about the possibility of Mercedes parting ways with a proven talent like George Russell. In response, the driver himself addressed the situation directly, although he refrained from commenting on the specific rumours regarding Max Verstappen and 2026.
Speaking to the media, Russell explained: “You need to be judged by your performance. As far as I’m concerned, I’ve got thick skin and, honestly, I don’t care what is written or what kind of rumours are going around. I prefer to focus on doing my job.”
The British driver also acknowledged that even a signed contract does not always provide job security in Formula 1. “At the end of the day, a contract is not a guarantee. We’ve seen it time and again — drivers have lost their seats when the performance wasn’t right, regardless of what the agreement said,” he stated.
Russell remains unfazed about Mercedes future
George Russell made it clear that he is not overly concerned about his long-term future with Mercedes, expressing his confidence in letting results speak for themselves. “On the other hand, if the performance is strong, everything will work out fine. So I see no reason to worry or to change anything about the way I’m doing things,” he concluded.
With the 2025 season still in full swing and Mercedes continuing to rebuild after a difficult transitional period, Russell’s consistency and maturity could prove crucial. Whether or not Max Verstappen eventually makes the leap to Mercedes remains to be seen — but for now, George Russell is focused firmly on his job and on delivering results for the Brackley-based team.
