Besides Liam Lawson, Formula 1 history has seen other important figures from New Zealand, including Bruce McLaren, who was the founder of the team that still bears his name and who tragically died during a test session at Goodwood.
Despite this heritage, when Lando Norris or Oscar Piastri wins, the British national anthem is played. McLaren, headquartered in Woking, Surrey, has chosen to adopt “God Save The King” as the anthem played on such occasions.
This choice has never been well received by the New Zealand public, who would prefer to see Bruce McLaren’s roots honored.
Lawson Also Criticizes McLaren
The topic of the national anthem was addressed by Liam Lawson, the latest New Zealander to compete in Formula 1. “It makes no sense,” Liam Lawson said in a recent interview for the Red Flags podcast. “McLaren is a New Zealand team, they still carry Bruce McLaren’s name. I don’t understand why they started playing the British anthem.” – he pointed out.
“When Red Bull wins, they play the Austrian anthem even though their factory is in the UK. It should be the same with McLaren. Their base is in the UK, but they’re a New Zealand team. For me, coming from New Zealand, it feels like a slap in the face every time. To us, Bruce McLaren is an absolute legend.” – he concluded.
