Is this really the celebration? In Tashkent, during the traditional FIA end-of-year Gala, which honors the champions of all the federation’s competitions, Leonardo Fornaroli may have finally realized he had truly made it. After winning the Formula 3 title 12 months ago, this year the driver from Piacenza went even further, winning the F2 championship in his rookie season and securing a reserve driver seat with the highly coveted McLaren team. An impressive achievement for someone who had never previously been part of any F1 team’s Academy.
During the award ceremony, Leonardo Fornaroli took a moment to comment on this special season and look ahead to his future in the papaya-colored team: “This year has been truly incredible: winning Formula 2 in my first year and then joining the McLaren driver program is a dream come true. I can’t wait to start working with McLaren. But this year’s result is also thanks to Invicta Racing and all the hard work they have done for me,” Leonardo Fornaroli said from the stage in Tashkent.
James Robinson praises Leonardo Fornaroli
The young Italian’s outstanding result was also highlighted by Invicta Racing team principal James Robinson: “This is our second consecutive team title – Robinson proudly noted – and I would say that Formula 2 is the hardest championship to win. I know many of you in this room may not agree, but in a championship with identical cars, winning two titles in a row is almost impossible. We couldn’t be happier, and this guy has done an extraordinary job, absolutely phenomenal considering he was a rookie F3 driver entering the championship for the first time. We knew he was very talented when we first met him and when he did his initial tests with us this time last year, but he exceeded all expectations.”
