The partnership between Max Verstappen and Red Bull seemed like a union for life: growing under Marko’s guidance, winning World Championships together, and a contract until 2028. However, as the team appears to be falling apart, the Dutchman is considering jumping ship early, seeking better fortunes elsewhere; it’s no coincidence that his father and his manager have been in frequent contact with Toto Wolff about a possible seat at Mercedes in 2026. The negotiations, however, haven’t been successful (at least for now).
The fate of the three-time champion is still undecided: if he doesn’t go to Mercedes, likely due to economic reasons given the salary he demands, Lawrence Stroll will surely be ready to offer him the paycheck he wants. And if Liam Lawson doesn’t develop, Red Bull may be forced to look outside its pool of drivers. Christian Horner has already mentioned to the media that he’s willing to talk to George Russell, though this was more of a jab at Toto Wolff than anything serious.
On the other hand, the team principal has a privileged contact with someone currently not far away in the paddock: Oscar Piastri. His manager is Mark Webber, and if the Woking team can’t manage two top drivers, someone might want to leave. This scenario was reported by Joe Saward after hearing some paddock rumors in Singapore and various comments over the past months.
