Fernando Alonso’s behind-the-scenes role before Adrian Newey’s move to Aston Martin. Fernando Alonso revealed a behind-the-scenes story about Adrian Newey's hiring by Aston Martin.

Fernando Alonso, Aston Martin 2024

The most talked-about figure in the F1 paddock for his success and more, Adrian Newey will wear Aston Martin’s colors starting with the next Formula 1 season. The Fernando Alonso – Adrian Newey duo could bring many surprises.

Adrian Newey signed with Aston Martin and became a shareholder after turning down other offers, including one from Ferrari. The Spanish driver revealed an interesting detail before Adrian Newey’s signing; Fernando Alonso, in fact, met with Adrian Newey in Monaco in an attempt to convince him to accept the Silverstone team’s project:

“I definitely sent him a message, like probably everyone who wanted to work with him did. I also saw him at the Monaco Historic Grand Prix, where he was racing that week, and we spent half an hour chatting. I don’t know, we all tried to convince him. In the end, I think Lawrence’s vision, the new factory, and what Aston Martin wants for the future, along with Honda, were probably key factors.” – the former Ferrari and McLaren driver explained.

Aston Martin gearing up for the future
Lawrence Stroll’s team is undergoing major changes, having hired high-profile engineers and key figures; Adrian Newey’s arrival is just one of their big investments. Additionally, Aston Martin will switch to Honda engines in 2026, a brand with which Adrian Newey has won with Red Bull.

On top of this, there’s the infrastructure upgrade with the new wind tunnel set to become operational soon. According to reports, Adrian Newey chose Aston Martin primarily for this operational aspect.

“Newey is a great asset for the team,” Fernando Alonso added. “And probably, for me, what I think is that Aston Martin is the team of the future, in a way. We are inaugurating new buildings at the factory, the campus, and the wind tunnel will be ready in January. Honda, Aramco, the best partners in the world, probably, and now also Adrian. I think the team and Lawrence’s vision are really taking shape.” – the two-time Formula 1 world champion concluded.
