The last six Grands Prix of the 2024 Formula season season could be decisive for Yuki Tsunoda’s future in Formula 1: let’s find out why.
A threat named Lawson
From Austin onwards, the Japanese driver will have a “new” teammate: Liam Lawson. The two have known each other for years—having grown up together in the Red Bull program—and are great friends, but they will do everything they can to beat each other on track.
In particular, if Yuki wants to prove that he has truly improved compared to previous years, he absolutely cannot afford to make mistakes against the New Zealander.
After being clearly outperformed by Pierre Gasly (in 2021 and ’22), Tsunoda has done well against Nyck De Vries and Daniel Ricciardo; however, he has never been seriously considered as a replacement for Sergio Pérez.
If he were to lose to a less experienced driver, his reputation within the paddock would be significantly diminished.
Beating Liam Lawson, on the other hand, could be the undeniable proof that—at least for now—the Japanese driver is the best internal option for a Red Bull seat. And with Max Verstappen’s future uncertain, who knows, he might get an opportunity sooner than expected.
