How Max Verstappen’s future triggered Christian Horner’s dismissal from Red Bull. Did Max Verstappen force Red Bull to fire Christian Horner? .

Could Max Verstappen be the real reason behind Christian Horner’s shocking dismissal from Red Bull Racing? That is the growing question circulating in the Formula 1 paddock, as rumors and behind-the-scenes whispers continue to unravel a possible power shift within the dominant Milton Keynes-based team.

The intertwined destinies of Christian Horner and Max Verstappen—two of the most influential and iconic figures at Red Bull—have become a major topic of discussion in recent weeks. Much of this speculation was sparked by rumors that the reigning world champion Max Verstappen could be on his way to Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, a story that was later denied but left lingering doubts.

Red Bull Racing, once the force behind Sebastian Vettel’s era of dominance, maintained complete control throughout the 2023 season with Max Verstappen. But in 2024, the cracks began to show. From the off-track scandal that engulfed Christian Horner, to the confirmed departure of legendary designer Adrian Newey, and the official split with Sergio Pérez at the end of the season—the warning signs were mounting.

A team that begins to lose key personnel is often a symptom of deeper instability. And the recent, stunning news of Christian Horner’s dismissal only adds to the narrative that something has been unraveling inside Red Bull.

Was Max Verstappen behind Horner’s exit from Red Bull Racing?

Could these two events—the rumors of Verstappen’s potential departure and Horner’s sudden removal—be directly connected? According to several sources close to the situation, it might not just be coincidence.

Just days before Horner’s departure was confirmed, reports had surfaced suggesting that Verstappen’s camp—led by his father Jos Verstappen and long-time advisor Raymond Vermeulen—had delivered an ultimatum to Red Bull Racing: either Max Verstappen is allowed to walk away, or Christian Horner must go.

Faced with that difficult choice, the team made its decision. And the one who paid the price was Christian Horner.

Internal pressures and Red Bull’s changing balance of power

Horner’s position as Team Principal had already been under scrutiny for months. As reported by outlets such as Auto Motor und Sport, there was mounting internal tension, with Red Bull’s Thai majority owners increasingly inclined toward a structural overhaul of the team’s leadership. That included being open to removing Horner—if doing so would secure the future of their most valuable asset, Max Verstappen.

Now, with Horner out of the picture, the ball is firmly in Verstappen’s court.

Will Max Verstappen go to Mercedes, or stay with Red Bull?

Now that Red Bull’s leadership has seemingly responded to the Verstappen camp’s demands, the logical next question is whether Max Verstappen will remain with the team, or still pursue a move to Mercedes in the near future.

For now, Mercedes remains a potential destination—especially while Toto Wolff has yet to finalize a long-term extension with George Russell. As long as there is uncertainty surrounding Mercedes’ driver lineup, the door remains open for Verstappen.

On the other hand, with Red Bull now under new management and having shown its willingness to make difficult decisions to keep Verstappen happy, he may find himself reassured—so long as the team continues to provide a competitive car capable of winning titles in 2025 and beyond.

After all, even a four-time World Champion has his expectations. Max Verstappen, who remains hungry for success, is not one to stay put unless the conditions are ideal for further glory.

Could Verstappen and Newey reunite at Aston Martin in 2026?

Looking further ahead, the 2026 Formula 1 regulation changes could also play a decisive role in Verstappen’s next move. If the Dutch driver is unhappy with Red Bull’s direction under the new rules, a move elsewhere could be back on the table.

One particularly intriguing possibility is Aston Martin. With Adrian Newey already heading there for a new chapter in his legendary career, and the team’s growing investment and ambition, Aston Martin could become a serious option for Verstappen should things at Red Bull take a wrong turn.
