How Kimi Antonelli mastered F1’s 2026 cars and Mercedes W17 to become world champion

Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes W17, 2026 F1

Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s 2026 Formula 1 world championship was built on far more than the performance of the Mercedes W17. The Italian’s aggressive yet controlled driving style allowed him to master the new generation of F1 cars, tyres and power units, turning characteristics that troubled many of his rivals into competitive advantages. At just 20 years old, Antonelli proved particularly effective at adapting to the biggest regulatory revolution in Formula 1 history, combining natural speed with an increasingly sophisticated understanding of energy management and tyre behaviour.

For more than half the season, Antonelli had the best car at his disposal, but machinery alone would not have been enough to fulfil his lifelong ambition. The Mercedes driver demonstrated an ability to exploit the characteristics of the new regulations more effectively than anyone else, using the very driving style that had contributed to his difficulties during his rookie campaign. By working on himself and refining his technique, he learned to make things that still felt unnatural to many of his rivals appear almost effortless.

Kimi Antonelli’s difficult F1 debut shaped his 2026 championship success

The Andrea Kimi Antonelli who emerged in 2026 was very different from the driver who had struggled during his first Formula 1 season. His maiden victory in China undoubtedly helped him overcome a psychological barrier, allowing him to move beyond the doubts that had followed him since his accident at Monza in 2024.

The Italian also showed the natural development expected of a driver who had entered Formula 1 barely out of his teens, putting the lessons of his rookie year into practice. He learned, for example, to explore the limits of both the car and the circuit during free practice without pushing excessively, ensuring he approached qualifying with fewer unknowns.

However, the most significant turning point for Antonelli came with the retirement of the previous generation of ground-effect Formula 1 cars.

The young Mercedes driver has always possessed an aggressive driving style, reflecting the energy and exuberance of a 20-year-old. His preference is to attack corners rather than wait for the car to rotate, an approach that differs from that of his team-mate George Russell.

“I demand more from the car, particularly on corner entry, so I need a rear end that stays reasonably stable,” Antonelli explained in 2025 while discussing the differences between their driving styles.

Rather than sacrificing corner entry to secure a better exit, Antonelli prefers to attack the corner and shorten the trajectory as much as possible by braking and steering simultaneously.

That technique, however, comes with a significant requirement: the rear of the car must remain planted. Driving so aggressively can unsettle the car, making rear stability essential if the driver is to maintain control.

The previous ground-effect cars produced enormous levels of grip and often appeared to run almost on rails. Their aerodynamics, however, could also be extremely unstable. Once grip disappeared, recovering control was exceptionally difficult, and that loss could happen without warning, undermining a driver’s confidence.

Antonelli’s aggressive style made him particularly vulnerable to those characteristics. In 2026, however, the situation changed dramatically.

Why Kimi Antonelli’s driving style suits the 2026 F1 cars

The regulatory overhaul introduced a fundamentally different generation of Formula 1 machinery, with major changes to both aerodynamics and power units. The new cars generate less downforce and are no longer glued to the track in the same way as their predecessors.

More importantly, their behaviour at the limit is different. Rather than suddenly breaking away, the 2026 cars tend to slide progressively and move around more, making it easier for drivers to sense when they are approaching the available grip limit.

“They’re more unstable, but they give you much more warning, even when the car is sliding,” Antonelli explained during the season.

For the Italian, this change proved particularly beneficial. He could finally make full use of his preferred driving technique, which turned out to be exceptionally well suited to the Mercedes W17.

The Brackley team’s car has a stable rear end, helping it transfer the explosive delivery of its electric motor to the track. Under the 2026 regulations, the electric motor is almost three times as powerful as those used in the previous generation of power units.

Yet the W17 also has a weakness. Mercedes has struggled to get the front tyres working effectively, with the team observing a reduced ability of the 2026 tyres to generate lateral forces through corners.

Antonelli’s driving technique has helped him work around this limitation.

How Kimi Antonelli overcomes the Mercedes W17’s front tyre weakness

By attacking the braking phase and corner entry, Antonelli uses the car’s weight transfer to help rotate it, reducing his reliance on the front tyres to generate the necessary turning force.

His tendency to brake and steer at the same time also helps him bring his tyres up to temperature during qualifying. That characteristic can be extremely valuable when the tyres are difficult to warm up, although it becomes less advantageous on circuits that place particularly high demands on the rubber.

At Barcelona, for example, the Italian pushed too hard and overheated his tyres. At Monte Carlo, by contrast, where other drivers struggled to generate sufficient tyre temperature, Antonelli encountered no such difficulty.

The result was a particularly effective relationship between the driver and his Mercedes, with the characteristics of the car complementing his preferred technique.

“When you can really get a handle on the car and make it do what you want, it’s a great feeling,” Antonelli explained.

His ability to extract performance from the W17 also helped reshape the competitive balance within Mercedes. During the season, Toto Wolff addressed George Russell’s difficulties against Andrea Kimi Antonelli, reflecting the challenges facing the more experienced driver.

Kimi Antonelli masters F1’s 2026 energy management regulations

Antonelli’s driving style also proved effective in another central area of the 2026 Formula 1 regulations: energy management.

Attacking corners decisively allows the Mercedes driver to maintain higher minimum speeds, reducing the amount of electrical energy required during the subsequent acceleration phase.

Preserving battery charge is particularly important under the new regulations because it allows the electric motor to continue providing assistance further along the straights, while rivals who have consumed more energy may be forced to reduce power earlier.

However, Antonelli’s effectiveness in this area is not simply the product of natural talent. It also reflects meticulous work to control the aggression that characterises his driving.

With the 2026 power units, repeatedly lifting off and reapplying the accelerator wastes more energy than covering the same section at a constant full throttle. Meanwhile, taking a corner differently from the previous lap can disrupt the battery management software’s calculations, potentially causing a greater loss of time on the straight than the driver gained through the corner.

“It’s very difficult to get everything working together properly, between how hard you push through the corners and how you manage the battery,” Antonelli observed early in the season.

Exceeding the limit and constantly adjusting the throttle no longer provides the same rewards, particularly when doing so causes the rear wheels to spin and wastes valuable energy.

The difference now comes from driving cleanly, consistently and precisely, while retaining enough aggression to make the tyres work effectively.

Antonelli recognised these requirements very early. Even before the championship began, he spent countless hours in the simulator learning how to apply the new techniques, adapting to processes that other drivers continued to find difficult.

His explanation following victory at Suzuka captured the essence of that development.

“The difference, for now, is that I’ve made an effort to make unnatural things feel more natural.”

Kimi Antonelli’s mental strength makes the difference in the F1 title fight

Looking more closely, however, Antonelli’s greatest strength may be his mentality.

Despite the enormous pressure of fighting for his first world championship, the Italian regularly appeared smiling and relaxed during interviews. That almost extraordinary sense of calm helped him remain composed behind the wheel, even during the most decisive moments of the season.

Even when chasing another driver or facing a particularly important situation, Antonelli rarely lost his composure.

The Spanish Grand Prix provided a revealing example. At Barcelona, Antonelli closed in on George Russell and began applying pressure, but refused to follow when the British driver tried to increase his pace and extend the gap.

Instead, the Italian chose not to overwork his tyres. Two laps later, Russell’s tyres began to suffer, leaving him vulnerable to an attack from his Mercedes team-mate.

It was an example of Antonelli’s ability to balance aggression with patience, understanding when to attack and when preserving tyre performance would provide a greater advantage.

There were still moments during the season when his emotions got the better of him and mistakes followed. However, Antonelli consistently accepted responsibility for those errors without falling into excessive self-criticism.

That resilience was particularly important in Malaysia, where Mercedes introduced an upgrade package that transformed the W17 into a more unpredictable and difficult car to control.

Rather than becoming discouraged, Antonelli remained determined to race with the new components. He recognised their potential and understood the importance of helping Mercedes identify and resolve the problems ahead of the 2027 season.

His approach reflected a characteristic often associated with the greatest Formula 1 champions: the ability to look beyond the immediate result and concentrate on the next objective.

It is also a quality recognised within his family. Following the championship triumph, Marco Antonelli explained how his son’s mental strength convinced him that he could become world champion.

The driving qualities behind Kimi Antonelli’s historic F1 championship

Antonelli’s success in 2026 was ultimately the result of several strengths coming together at precisely the right moment.

His aggressive corner entry suited the characteristics of the new cars, while the Mercedes W17’s stable rear end gave him the confidence to exploit that technique. His ability to generate tyre temperature helped him overcome one of the car’s limitations, and his increasingly precise driving allowed him to manage electrical energy without sacrificing too much speed.

These technical qualities were supported by a calm, determined approach that enabled him to recover from mistakes and continue developing throughout the championship.

His triumph also provided a powerful vindication of Mercedes’ faith in the young Italian. Following the title victory, Toto Wolff praised Antonelli’s character and the values he represents, highlighting qualities that extend beyond his performances on track.

Antonelli has already demonstrated the ability to think about the next challenge, even while celebrating the greatest achievement of his career. For now, however, the Italian, Mercedes and the wider Italian motorsport community have every reason to savour a historic world championship.

In a season defined by a new generation of Formula 1 technology, Andrea Kimi Antonelli found success by mastering its most unfamiliar demands. Through natural talent, careful preparation and an increasingly refined driving style, he made the unnatural feel natural.
