Toto Wolff has praised Andrea Kimi Antonelli for proving that Formula 1 drivers can become world champions without being selfish or ruthless, while delivering a pointed message to those who constantly complain over team radio. Following the Italian’s 2026 F1 world championship triumph, the Mercedes team principal insisted that humility, integrity, loyalty and respect are just as important as outright driving talent.
The Austrian believes the 20-year-old represents a new model for Formula 1, challenging the traditional perception that successful drivers must be prepared to do anything to win. His remarks were particularly striking because they included criticism of arrogant competitors, those who repeatedly complain over the radio and drivers who crash, although he did not identify any individual by name.
Toto Wolff celebrates Kimi Antonelli’s F1 world title after bold Mercedes decision
Toto Wolff deserves considerable credit for Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s 2026 Formula 1 world championship success. The Mercedes team principal placed his faith in the young Italian from an early stage, eventually choosing him as Lewis Hamilton’s successor when the seven-time world champion decided to leave Mercedes and begin a new chapter with Ferrari.
At the time, many questioned Wolff’s judgement, with some considering the decision to promote such an inexperienced driver an enormous gamble. Antonelli’s subsequent development and championship triumph have now provided a powerful response to those critics.
The young Italian’s rise has also changed the competitive picture within Mercedes, where George Russell had previously been regarded as the team’s established reference point. Earlier in the season, Wolff addressed George Russell’s difficulties against Andrea Kimi Antonelli, highlighting the increasingly important comparison between the two drivers.
Antonelli’s success in Austin was another significant milestone in his championship campaign, with Wolff praising his performance following the crucial United States Grand Prix victory.
However, after the world championship was secured, the Mercedes team principal chose to emphasise something other than his driver’s performances on track.
Toto Wolff explains why Kimi Antonelli represents a new type of F1 champion
At the end of the traditional post-race media session, Toto Wolff highlighted one particular aspect of Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s personality: the fact that he is a good person.
It is a quality that might seem obvious outside motorsport, but Wolff believes it carries particular significance in the highly competitive world of Formula 1. According to the Mercedes boss, Antonelli has brought a different set of values into the paddock, demonstrating that success does not have to come at the expense of respect for others.
Wolff argued that the traditional image of an uncompromising, self-centred racing driver is outdated, and that Formula 1 should instead encourage a different approach among its established competitors and the next generation of talent.
Toto Wolff criticises selfish F1 drivers who complain on team radio
“That idea of a driver who wants to win at all costs, who is selfish, opportunistic and ruthless for his own benefit – that model of driver is now outdated,” Toto Wolff commented.
“We have a new champion who embodies values such as humility, integrity, loyalty, respect and being himself, and who should be a role model for many other young drivers in the junior categories, as well as for those few arrogant drivers in Formula 1, for those who complain incessantly over the radio, for those who complain and for those who crash.”
“Look at this 20-year-old and then think about what you can do to improve. That’s the message for these guys.”
Wolff’s remarks went beyond praising Antonelli’s personality. He presented the Mercedes driver’s attitude as an example of how competitors should conduct themselves, suggesting that certain behaviours commonly associated with Formula 1 no longer belong in the sport’s future.
The Austrian also made it clear that he sees these values as consistent with the direction in which Formula 1’s leadership should want the championship to develop.
“This is how the FIA, this is how Mohammed [Ben Sulayem] and Stefano [Domenicali], and this is how I would like to see drivers in the future. This is modern F1.”
“Kimi represents the modern Formula 1 driver precisely because of those values, not just because of his talent. Talent comes, but everyone has it. However, you also have to be a good person, and he has shown that you can beat anyone out there precisely by being a good person.”
Mercedes boss believes Kimi Antonelli’s values should inspire future F1 drivers
For Toto Wolff, Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s championship triumph represents more than a successful decision to promote a young driver into one of Formula 1’s most prestigious seats. The Austrian believes the Italian has demonstrated that sporting success and personal integrity can go hand in hand.
His comments also carried a clear message to other competitors in the paddock. By referring to arrogance, constant radio complaints and mistakes on track, Wolff offered a pointed criticism of certain attitudes without explicitly naming the drivers he had in mind.
Whether any of Antonelli’s rivals recognised themselves in those remarks remains open to interpretation. What is clear is that Wolff wants the newly crowned world champion to be judged not only by his achievements behind the wheel, but also by the example he sets away from it.
Antonelli’s title has already vindicated Mercedes’ decision to place its confidence in him at such a young age. For Wolff, however, the greater message is that Formula 1’s next generation does not need to embrace selfishness or ruthlessness to succeed at the highest level.
