At first glance it may look like a simple confirmation, but nothing in Formula 1 is ever as straightforward as it seems. If the continuation of the partnership between George Russell and his race engineer Marcus Dudley can be considered natural, given that they have now been working together since the British driver’s second year at Mercedes, the situation was far less obvious for the young Italian.
Mercedes: Antonelli convinces Bonnington, Russell continues with Dudley
Peter Bonnington has long been known as Lewis Hamilton’s trusted race engineer. Having started working together back in 2013, the pair went on to win six drivers’ world championships and eight constructors’ titles. For that reason, when Andrea Kimi Antonelli was assigned to him last year, it was far from certain that “Bono” would be willing to continue with the young Italian after putting his abilities to the test.
It now appears that Kimi Antonelli’s performances on track, combined with his character and approach, have convinced Peter Bonnington to accept continuing as his race engineer for the 2026 season as well. From the outside, this may seem like a minor detail, but the relationship that a driver and race engineer build, Grand Prix after Grand Prix, can play a crucial role in the championship ambitions of both the driver and the team.
For Russell and Dudley, by contrast, the decision was almost a formality. Working together since 2023, the two know each other inside out, having developed a strong understanding that has become one of Mercedes’ key strengths in recent seasons.
It is also worth remembering that Mercedes will be the fifth Formula 1 team to unveil its new car and livery this year. The official presentation is scheduled for 22 January, following those of Red Bull, VCARB, Haas and Audi. Ferrari, meanwhile, will reveal its car the following day alongside Alpine. The remaining four cars on the grid will then be presented during the first days of February.
