The final round of the Formula 1 season is not only about the on-track battle for the Constructors’ Championship between Ferrari and McLaren. Off-track tensions took center stage during Thursday’s media day as George Russell and Max Verstappen clashed with verbal attacks and counterattacks over incidents in Qatar. The dispute drew significant attention within the paddock, prompting Marko to step in with his own remarks.
The disagreement began last week when Verstappen claimed he had “lost all respect” for Russell. According to the Dutchman, the Mercedes driver deliberately hindered him during qualifying, resulting in Verstappen receiving a penalty for “unnecessarily slow driving.” Despite inheriting the pole position, Russell started alongside Verstappen, only for the Red Bull driver to overtake him immediately at Turn 1.
The feud carried over to Abu Dhabi, where Russell accused Verstappen of threatening him before the Qatar race, alleging the Dutchman said he would “slam his head into the wall” at the start in Losail. Verstappen denied these claims, calling Russell a “traitor” and a “loser” in response.
Helmut Marko’s Response
The ongoing tension inevitably drew in key figures from both teams, with team principals Toto Wolff and Christian Horner engaging in a heated exchange on the matter. The debate even led to comparisons involving the animal kingdom.
Helmut Marko was the latest to join the discussion, unsurprisingly defending Verstappen against Russell’s accusations. Speaking to *Sky Germany*, the Austrian remarked, “The situation has blown up far too much and should have stayed between the drivers. But above all, it’s important to stick to the truth. I believe this is a conversation that should be resolved directly between [Russell and Verstappen].”
