The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend kicked off with George Russell’s harsh remarks about Max Verstappen. Tensions between the two remain far from resolved following the Dutchman’s statements after the Qatar GP.
The four-time Formula 1 world champion expressed frustration over the Mercedes driver’s conduct during a meeting with the race stewards to discuss the impeding incident in qualifying. According to Verstappen, Russell used aggressive language, strongly demanding a penalty.
Russell, however, countered by claiming that Verstappen had crossed the line during the stewards’ meeting, allegedly making some rather strong comments.
An External Perspective Emerges
It’s impossible to determine who is telling the truth. However, reports from the Abu Dhabi paddock provide some insight into what might have occurred in Lusail between George Russell and Max Verstappen.
According to Sky Sports UK, the Mercedes driver may have shared inaccurate details. The British broadcaster suggests there were no shouting matches between Max Verstappen and the FIA stewards.
What is clear is that there’s no love lost between the two, despite other drivers attempting to diffuse the tension. At the end-of-year dinner, Lando Norris notably pointed out, “The two you’re thinking of were sitting as far apart as possible.”
