Helmut Marko refutes Red Bull’s official statement: “I didn’t read that nonsense”. Helmut Marko opens up about his departure from Red Bull.

Max Verstappen, Helmut Marko, 2024 F1

Helmut Marko has stirred curiosity with his latest interview, hinting that his departure from Red Bull was not as smooth as officially presented. On December 9th, Red Bull confirmed Helmut Marko’s resignation from his role as team advisor after 20 years of success together. The press release quoted Marko explaining that he felt it was the right moment to step back “after narrowly missing the World Championship this season.”

The statement was echoed in an interview the same day with Kleine Zeitung, where Marko said: “The end of the championship brought great disappointment. And this disappointment led to the decision: it was the right time to take a step back,” assuring fans that he left on “excellent terms with Red Bull.”

However, this narrative has now been questioned following a new interview with Dutch newspaper De Limburger. Helmut Marko revealed that the idea of leaving originated in Qatar and that the decision was finalized on the Thursday of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Yet, he firmly denied that his resignation was a result of Max Verstappen missing out on the title.

“I don’t want to go into details, but I didn’t read that nonsensical press release,” Marko emphasized, almost disowning the official statement attributed to him. He continued: “A lot has changed within the team in a short time. You think you know people well, but then you realize it’s not like that… I won’t say more. A fifth title for Max wouldn’t have changed anything,” he concluded cryptically, leaving fans to wonder exactly who he was referring to.

The internal power dynamics and political struggles within top F1 teams often prove as crucial as the on-track performance. The contrasting accounts from Red Bull and Helmut Marko himself suggest a deeper, more acrimonious split than initially reported. Marko’s cryptic comments about betrayal leave the F1 world guessing about the true internal politics that led to his exit after 20 years. Who do you think Marko was referring to when he said he didn’t really know the people at Red Bull? Share your theories in the comments below!**
