Former F1 race director Michael Masi takes on New Zealand championship role. Michael Masi, former Formula 1 race director, takes on a new role as event director for the Repco NextGen NZ Championship.

After the turbulent end of the 2021 Formula 1 season, where he served as Race Director, Michael Masi was sidelined by the Federation. Over the years, the Australian reinvented himself in various motorsport roles, including Vice Chairman of the Australian Karting Board, member of Motorsport Australia’s executive board, and, until last September, President of the Supercars Commission in his home country.

Now, Michael Masi has a new assignment: he has been appointed event director for the Repco NextGen NZ Championship, a New Zealand racing series that includes multiple categories such as GR86, TA2, Muscle Cars, Porsche, and GT, sponsored by Repco and in partnership with Toyota.

Deborah Day, President of Motorsport New Zealand, commented on the appointment: “Michael’s experience at the highest levels of global motorsport will help us refine our systems, improve our championships, and support our officials.”

Michael Masi’s new appointment highlights that administrative experience gained at the pinnacle of motorsport remains highly sought after across global racing series. While his F1 tenure remains controversial, his experience is clearly viewed as a valuable asset for refining and strengthening other championships. **Do you believe Masi’s leadership experience from F1 will significantly benefit the development of the Repco NextGen NZ Championship?
