Kimi Antonelli: every rookie’s growth must include a “wake-up call”
After a brilliant start followed by a challenging period, Kimi Antonelli has found renewed confidence thanks to the guidance of his race engineer, Peter Bonnington. A true “wake-up call” that marks an important step in his development within the Mercedes team.
It is often the case that during a young driver’s learning process, mentors and senior figures need to pause for a moment, reflect, and sometimes offer a firm correction when things are not going as planned. This is a natural and essential part of a rookie’s path toward maturity.
After an impressive beginning to his debut Formula 1 season, Kimi Antonelli began to struggle during the European rounds. On circuits he already knew from his experience in junior categories, the young driver from Bologna collected just three championship points.
“I stopped focusing on the process. I was only thinking about the final result. I believe that was my biggest issue during the European season,” the nineteen-year-old explained through Mercedes’ official channels.
Indeed, during several free practice sessions, Antonelli often found himself in the gravel or touching the barriers, preventing him from completing normal preparation work ahead of qualifying and the race. These setbacks inevitably influenced his final results and overall confidence.
At the same time, it should not be forgotten that the Mercedes driver was caught in a media storm partly created by Toto Wolff himself, who has been publicly fixated on finding the next great rival to Max Verstappen. Fortunately, Antonelli was never abandoned by Peter Bonnington and his engineering team, who continued to support him through the difficult phase.
Kimi Antonelli on Peter Bonnington: “He has a crucial role”
With his vast experience in Formula 1, Peter Bonnington has naturally become a positive and stabilizing influence for the young Mercedes driver. Before working with Antonelli, Bonnington had the privilege of collaborating with two of the sport’s most legendary figures, Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton. Antonelli has been clear that his race engineer plays a crucial role in his progress, and the way Bonnington communicates with him during races has a major impact on his development.
“He has great knowledge and always brings something essential to my work. He’s been fundamental. During the races, the way he talks to me makes all the difference,” said Antonelli.
He went on to reveal an important turning point in his season: “After Monza, I had a meeting with Bono and the engineers. I got a little kick in the backside. Honestly, that was exactly what I needed. Now I’m back on the right track. I’m trying to drive well, to put everything together, and I know the results will come naturally.”
The weekends in Baku and Singapore showcased the determination of the 2006-born driver to turn his season around. The positive results achieved by the Mercedes rookie came as the reward of a weekend executed perfectly from the very first free practice sessions on Friday. Notably, Antonelli played a key role in the team’s latest victory, achieved by George Russell at the Singapore Grand Prix.
When Russell was unable to continue in FP2 due to a technical issue, Antonelli’s contribution became vital for the team. He took over the data collection duties during the race-pace simulations, demonstrating that Mercedes is placing strong trust in its young talent. His maturity and technical understanding are growing rapidly, suggesting a promising future for the Italian driver within the team.
The final races to prove himself at Mercedes
Recent performances, which have seen both Mercedes and Red Bull fighting competitively at the front, have given us an idea of what to expect in the final stretch of the season. Even though McLaren has already secured the Constructors’ Championship, the battle for second place remains wide open. To achieve that goal, the Brackley-based team will also rely on the contribution of its rookie driver.
With the support of an experienced engineer and a regained mental sharpness, Kimi Antonelli has proven his ability to respond when faced with challenges. Mercedes believes in him, and his recent performances confirm that the path he is on is the right one. What remains to be seen is whether the consistency and maturity he has shown in recent weekends will carry him through to the end of the season.
Antonelli’s story illustrates the essential combination of talent, humility, and mentorship required for any young driver to thrive in Formula 1. Sometimes, even future champions need a “wake-up call” to remind them of the fundamentals — and Kimi Antonelli’s response to that challenge shows why Mercedes continues to place its faith in him.
