The end of an era
The recent announcement of Helmut Marko’s departure from Red Bull, officially attributed to his advancing age—Marko is 82—and the disappointment of narrowly missing Max Verstappen’s fifth consecutive title by just two points after an epic comeback, has naturally sparked widespread reactions in the Formula 1 world.
While certainly a controversial figure, Marko has played a decisive role in shaping two decades of F1. Of the 20 drivers who competed full-time in the 2025 season, seven were nurtured and debuted in F1 thanks to him and the Red Bull Junior program. Nearly half the current grid, in some way, owes their start in the F1 Circus to Marko’s guidance.
Vettel’s tribute
One former F1 driver who owes much to the Austrian advisor and talent scout is Sebastian Vettel, four-time world champion between 2010 and 2013, and the first true phenomenon to emerge from Marko’s ‘young driver’ project. Speaking to F1-Insider.com, the German champion expressed deep gratitude for his ‘discoverer,’ crediting him as the mastermind behind Red Bull’s successes.
“Marko’s departure? I was as surprised as everyone else,” Sebastian Vettel said regarding the news. “I wish Helmut all the best for the future and a well-deserved retirement. He is the architect of Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso’s success,” added Sebastian Vettel. “Not only in terms of selecting drivers, but also for the key decisions regarding team composition, personnel, and strategy.” – the former Ferrari and Aston Martin driver pointed out.
Ultimately, Helmut Marko leaves a void in the Red Bull structure that will be difficult to fill, having served as the backbone of their strategic and developmental triumphs for two decades. By bridging the gap between raw talent and world championship glory, Marko didn’t just find drivers; he built an empire, ensuring his name will remain synonymous with Red Bull’s golden era long after he steps away from the pit wall.
