Max Verstappen has admitted he is far from optimistic about Formula 1’s return to Silverstone with the new-generation 2026 cars, warning that one of the sport’s most iconic circuits could provide a very different driving experience compared to previous seasons.

Verstappen expects a very different Silverstone

After a relatively entertaining Austrian Grand Prix weekend, with plenty of on-track battles at the always action-packed Red Bull Ring, Formula 1 now heads to Silverstone for what could prove to be one of the biggest tests yet for the 2026 regulations.

The home of British motorsport became one of the standout venues during the 2022-2025 ground-effect era. Drivers were able to attack Silverstone’s famous high-speed corners with enormous aerodynamic downforce, producing some of the most spectacular laps of the season.

However, according to Verstappen, the situation has now changed dramatically.

The 2026 Formula 1 cars generate significantly less aerodynamic downforce, while energy management over the course of a lap is expected to become one of the biggest technical challenges. Recharging the battery on a circuit where heavy braking zones are limited will be particularly difficult, making Silverstone an even greater test for both drivers and engineers.

Max Verstappen’s warning

Speaking during the pre-race press conference, Max Verstappen urged everyone to prepare for a Silverstone experience unlike anything seen in recent years.

“When I tried it on the simulator, I couldn’t stop laughing—it feels like a completely different track,” said Verstappen. “The battery barely lasts for one lap, you’re flat out almost all the time, and it’s going to be very difficult because you simply can’t recharge the battery.”

Max Verstappen’s comments highlight one of the biggest concerns surrounding Formula 1’s new technical regulations. While the 2026 cars promise a new era of competition, iconic circuits such as Silverstone may require drivers to completely rethink how they manage energy throughout a lap, potentially transforming the character of one of the championship’s most beloved venues.
