On Thursday of the Mexico City Grand Prix, the Mercedes team provided a hilarious scene. Specifically, George Russell turned into an impromptu “emergency surgeon” to save his favorite sunglasses, which had suffered an unexpected break. Standing nearby is Kimi Antonelli, busy looking at his phone.
Before diving into the weekend’s main action, Mercedes’ garage allowed some lighter moments—especially when one of the drivers had an urgent personal task: reassembling his favorite sunglasses.
Armed with screwdrivers and plenty of patience, the British driver carried out a true “precision operation”: he disassembled another pair of sunglasses to retrieve a tiny screw and transplant it into his own. The entire process was captured in a video posted on Mercedes AMG F1’s official social media accounts.
Observing casually, alongside Frederik Vesti and other team members, was also the other full-time driver Kimi Antonelli, who remained focused on his phone until the admin engaged him with the question: “What do you think, are you impressed?” His ironic response, “Yes, I’d say an incredible job,” elicited smiles from fans, while Russell playfully replied: “If you ever have trouble with your glasses, just bring them to me!”
This light-hearted moment once again highlights the fun and human side of Formula 1, before the weekend inevitably shifts back to a different kind of “screws” and “mechanics”: those of the race cars on track. Below is the video capturing the entire amusing episode.
