The Kiwi ready for his first Formula 1 season with Red Bull
“How do I feel about my ‘debut’ with Red Bull? I’ve been working towards this goal for six years since I joined the young driver program. It’s definitely a great opportunity.” After two years in limbo, with the chance to participate in a few races – and do so successfully – Liam Lawson is about to experience his first year as a full-time driver with Red Bull, an opportunity that may have come at the wrong time for the New Zealander, given that Milton Keynes’ team’s fortunes are currently on the decline.
“McLaren was certainly impressive in Bahrain, and this weekend we’ll see more or less where we stand,” said Liam Lawson. “Pierre Waché said the improvements haven’t met the goals set for now? I think Max Verstappen definitely has a clearer idea of the current state of the car based on the last two years. We obviously want to improve the car.” – he pointed out.
The last New Zealand driver to win a GP in F1 was Danny Hulme in 1974 in Argentina, driving for McLaren. When asked about the possibility of ending this long drought, Lawson responded without getting carried away by overly ambitious thoughts: “Obviously, all of us drivers have the dream of winning a GP, but I think I still have a long way to go and a lot of work to do before thinking about goals of this magnitude. There are, for example, many tracks where I haven’t raced in F1 yet, I need to gain experience.” – the Red Bull driver concluded.
